<div style="height:1em" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading">Context</h2>

<p>Mara Sangoi teaches Italian to adults. She lives in the German-speaking region of Switzerland and had her website in both English and German. However, she had started getting visitors from Spain who were interested in her Italian lessons and courses, and as a result, she wanted to add a Spanish translation to the website.</p>

<p>She contacted me because she wanted someone to configure the Spanish translation and to revise the translated texts.</p>

<div class="inherit-container-width wp-block-group has-ast-global-color-0-background-color has-background is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained"><div class="wp-block-group__inner-container">
<h2 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading">Website:</h2>

<p class="has-text-align-center" style="font-size:1.5em"><a href="https://marasangoi.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> Mara Sangoi</a></p>
</div></div>

<div style="height:4em" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading">Proposed Solution</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image alignright size-medium-large"><img decoding="async" src="https://dandelium.studio/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Screenshot-2023-02-15-at-18.29.37-512x277.png" alt="Screenshot from Mara Sangoi's home page. It has a menu at the top, and below it there's a picture of Mara and mentions her services: improving your communication skills in Italian." class="wp-image-3532"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Mara Sangoi&#8217;s main page, in Spanish.</figcaption></figure>

<p>Although what Mara required was simple, there was an important decision to make. Her website used a free version of a plugin that only allowed two languages (original + 1 translation). As a result, she had to decide whether she wanted to pay for the premium version of the plugin, or change to a free plugin (which was more expensive upfront).</p>

<p>She finally decided to keep things as they were and pay for the premium version of the plugin.</p>

<p>Moreover, I also noticed that I didn’t have access to any backups. As a result, I suggested to her the option of creating regular backups, which was also useful before adding the third language to the website.</p>

<p>After creating a backup of the website, I proceeded to install the premium plugin. Once she handed me the texts, I revised them, made some small suggestions, and added the Spanish translation to the website.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image alignleft size-medium-large"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="512" height="195" src="https://dandelium.studio/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/mara-sangoi-menu-512x195.jpg" alt="Screenshot of the dropdown menu to select a language. There is a globe and below it there is the list of available languages." class="wp-image-3534" srcset="https://dandelium.studio/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/mara-sangoi-menu-512x195.jpg 512w, https://dandelium.studio/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/mara-sangoi-menu-300x114.jpg 300w, https://dandelium.studio/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/mara-sangoi-menu-768x293.jpg 768w, https://dandelium.studio/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/mara-sangoi-menu.jpg 800w" sizes="(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Detail of the dropdown menu showing the available languages.</figcaption></figure>

<p>A small challenge that I faced and that I didn’t expect was fitting the language switcher in the menu. The menu was tight and grouping the different languages under a tag such as “Lang” or “Language” was not possible, because the menu split in two lines. In the end, I decided to use a globe icon instead. If you hover over it, a dropdown menu appears with the different languages.</p>

<p></p>

<h2 class="has-text-align-center has-ast-global-color-2-color has-text-color wp-block-heading">Results</h2>

<p>The main benefits are the following:</p>

<p class="has-ast-global-color-3-color has-text-color">Regular backups have been set up. If anything goes wrong, Mara will have several backup copies at her disposal.</p>

<h2 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading">Context</h2>

<p>Jennifer has more than 14 years of experience as a teacher of Spanish (and German). About 8 years ago, she started <a href="https://profe-de-espanol.de">Profe-de-español</a>, a website for students and teachers of Spanish. She has been publishing regularly since then. Her posts range from ideas to use in class, to course materials and escape room games; the list goes on. She’s very active online and she stands out for her love of technology and gamification.&nbsp;</p>

<p>She contacted me in 2022 because she’d been running the website on her own, and she wanted someone to help with the technical side of things, so that she could focus on creating content. I was positively surprised by how much she had managed to do on her own.</p>

<div class="inherit-container-width wp-block-group alignfull has-ast-global-color-0-background-color has-background is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained"><div class="wp-block-group__inner-container">

</div></div>
</div></div>

<div style="height:4em" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading">Proposed Solution</h2>

<p>Unlike other projects, which are more or less closed, <strong>I’m still working</strong> with Jennifer.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The Start</h3>

<p>I started off my collaboration with her by taking a look at the website and noting which aspects could be improved. This included:</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image alignleft size-medium-large has-custom-border"><img decoding="async" src="https://dandelium.studio/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Screenshot-2023-02-17-at-17.34.32-512x278.png" alt="Main page of profe de español.de. It shows a big logo on top. Below it, there is the main menu. Below the menu the latest entries are shown, displayed in a grid." class="wp-image-3558" style="border-width:1px"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><a href="https://profe-de-español.de" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Profe-de-español.de</a> main page</figcaption></figure>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Setting up <strong>regular backups</strong></li>

<li><strong>Adding mechanisms to the website to avoid Spam</strong>. Because of Spam, the email server wasn&#8217;t working (i.e. no emails were being sent)</li>

<li><strong>Cleaning up the database</strong>, with the goal of removing traces from plugins which were no longer used and content revisions. The content revisions were taking up a lot of space.</li>

<li><strong>Diagnosing and figuring out why Elementor</strong> (one of the extensions) <strong>could not be updated</strong>. It turned out that there was a conflict with an old plugin which wasn’t updated anymore, and so we decided to remove it.</li>
</ul>

<p>Another important aspect that I worked on was <strong>blocking the cookies</strong>. In order to comply with the GDPR, it’s really important to block analytical and statistical cookies until the user gives their explicit consent. The website included embedded content from many different services. It was quite challenging to find a plugin that could work with many different services and effectively block the cookies from all these different services. I did manage to block most of them, but not all, and in these cases Jennifer decided to remove the services all together.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Currently</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image alignright size-medium-large has-custom-border"><img decoding="async" width="512" height="279" src="https://dandelium.studio/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Screenshot-2023-02-17-at-17.37.28-512x279.png" alt="There is the main menu at the top. Below it, there is the post's featured image and the title. Under them, the post's categories are shown. Finally, there is the post's text." class="wp-image-3560" style="border-width:1px" srcset="https://dandelium.studio/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Screenshot-2023-02-17-at-17.37.28-512x279.png 512w, https://dandelium.studio/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Screenshot-2023-02-17-at-17.37.28-300x163.png 300w, https://dandelium.studio/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Screenshot-2023-02-17-at-17.37.28-1024x558.png 1024w, https://dandelium.studio/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Screenshot-2023-02-17-at-17.37.28-768x418.png 768w, https://dandelium.studio/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Screenshot-2023-02-17-at-17.37.28-1536x837.png 1536w, https://dandelium.studio/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Screenshot-2023-02-17-at-17.37.28-2048x1116.png 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Sample entry from the blog. In this case, I helped configure an Elementor template for entries in the category &#8220;Aprender Español&#8221;. The goal was to eliminate the sidebar on the right.</figcaption></figure>

<p>Since Jennifer has created so much content for her website, we’ve lately (February 2023) been working on <strong>adding a membership</strong> to the website. There will still be a lot of free content, but some of the content will only be available to paying users. So, instead of using external services to earn some money from her work, she now can generate the money from her website.</p>

<p>I’ve been very lucky to have the opportunity to collaborate with Jennifer, since she has given me the opportunity to work on a website that has been <em>online</em> for some time. This presents different challenges to a website that is created from scratch, and <strong>I’ve learnt a lot</strong> from working with her.</p>

<h2 class="has-text-align-center has-ast-global-color-2-color has-text-color wp-block-heading">Results</h2>

<p>The main benefits are the following:</p>

<div class="inherit-container-width wp-block-group alignfull no-padding-top has-ast-global-color-5-background-color has-background is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained" style="padding-top:0px"><div class="wp-block-group__inner-container">
